Coral Reef Killers
Photo
posted by xavene 1 yr ago
Crown of Thorns or COT (Acanthaster planci) are formidable predators of coral reef systems and one COT can decimate coral populations at the rate of 6 square meter annually. One square meter of healthy coral reef can support 20 metric tons of fish per year, in this case, it can displace 60 metric tons of fish per year for every COT. Triton is one of the primary predators of COT, but sad to say, coastal populations have harvested this species for ornamental trade.
I joined this coastal monitoring and assessment at Mauban Power Plant in Quezon as part of the COT Extraction Team. In Australia, the state pays $1 per COT extraction. If you are a Scuba Diver I challenge you to do your share of getting rid of these predators in your coastal area to maintain coral growth. |
